The U.S. State Department estimates that 80% of the Guatemalan population lives in poverty. Life in Guatemala is very difficult. Poor infrastructure results in a tremendous struggle to survive. SpeakSpanishLive.com was created with a giving spirit, intended to help educated, hard-working individuals improve their day-to-day lives. This program is service oriented, designed to provide a new level of fluency in the Spanish language, while creating a sense of purpose and hope for many in Guatemala. SpeakSpanishLive.com makes a genuine difference in the lives of the language professionals of Antigua, Guatemala.
SpeakSpanishLive supports local Guatemalan programs, Common Hope and As Green As It Gets. Common Hope provides, among other services, schooling and homes for those in greatest need. Our students participating in the Study Abroad Immersion Program often work at Common Hope, building homes, teaching children and adults, and/or providing other skills and services needed to brighten the lives of many.
Partnering with producers from impoverished communities, As Green As It Gets focuses on economic development and environmentally sustainable agriculture in Guatemala. Students have the opportunity to “build a tour” with As Green As It Gets, choosing from activities like spending afternoons planting and harvesting in the rich Guatemalan coffee fields, tree planting and reforestation, and/or working community construction projects. Students will be privilege to the most informative agricultural hike ever!
