Inspired by her travels to Antigua, Guatemala over the last ten years, Cathy Mathwig designed and formulated SpeakSpanishLive.com. For three months, Cathy lived with a Guatemalan family while studying Spanish. Her personal experiences while there resulted in a deep passion and respect for the Guatemalan people, their culture and the Spanish language. Cathy is now fluent in speaking Spanish, and she left Guatemala with a genuine desire to make a difference in the lives of the language professionals and their families. It became her mission to provide them with additional income by developing a program capable of extending their teaching skills to students around the world who are unable to travel to Guatemala. Thus, SpeakSpanishLive.com came to fruition.
Learning through SpeakSpanishLive.com not only strengthens a student’s Spanish fluency, but also provides much needed income to enrich the lives of the Guatemalan people.
Antigua, Guatemala is recognized as one of the leading destinations in the world for learning Spanish. Over the last two decades, Antigua has become a hub for learning Spanish. There are over 100 language schools in Antigua. Consequently, the instructors have a tremendous amount of experience in effectively breaking down the language, resulting in a proven method of teaching, which greatly enhances their students’ ability of gaining fluency.
The U.S. State Department estimates that 80% of the Guatemalan population lives in poverty. Life in Guatemala is very difficult. SpeakSpanishLive.com was created with a giving spirit, intended to help individuals improve their day-to-day lives and look to the future with hope.

Travel Abroad Immersion Program
Visit Guatemala as part of our study abroad immersion program that will catapult you to a new level of fluency in Spanish. SpeakSpanishLive.com offers accommodations in Antigua, Guatemala where you can live with a Spanish family (often the family of your online instructor) taking one-on-one Spanish classes. There is no faster or better method of learning Spanish! Afternoons can be spent volunteering to build homes with Common Hope, working in the coffee fields with As Green As It Gets, hiking volcanoes, visiting lost Mayan worlds, or simply enjoying the beauty of Antigua. This is an opportunity of a lifetime to gain the functional level of fluency in Spanish that you have always wanted.

SpeakSpanishLive supports local Guatemalan programs, Common Hope and As Green As It Gets. Common Hope provides, among other services, schooling and homes for those in greatest need. Students participating in the Study Abroad Immersion Program may work at Common Hope, building homes, teaching children and adults, and/or providing other skills and services needed to brighten the lives of many.
Partnering with producers from impoverished communities, As Green As It Gets focuses on economic development and environmentally sustainable agriculture in Guatemala. Students have the opportunity to “build a tour” with As Green As It Gets, choosing from activities like spending afternoons planting and harvesting in the rich Guatemalan coffee fields, tree planting and reforestation, and/or working community construction projects. Students will be privileged to the most informative agricultural hike ever!
SpeakSpanishLive.com is a service organization, designed to provide a new level of fluency in the Spanish language, while bridging the gap between two cultures with so much to offer one another.
